SIGHTS TO SEE WHEN VISITING HARARE

Harare is a city which appreciates and is proud of its culture and traditional heritage.   • National Gallery of Zimbabwe

Located in the southeast corner of the Harare Gardens, the national gallery of Zimbabwe is center for all the contemporary African arts. There are exhibitions lining up each month with new and fresh collection of arts in various forms like paintings, photography, stone sculptures and masks and carvings etc. There is a small shop just attached to the gallery where one can find stock up on crafts and books on Zimbabwean art and a café to serve you coffee as you look.

Bibliophiles take a note of this one, the national archives of Zimbabwe was built in 1935. This building is a repository for the all the artifacts, accounts, books, diaries and photos of explorers and settlers of Rhodesia and modern Zimbabwe and a display about the Second Chimurenga.

  • Mukuvisi Woodlands Environmental Centre

This is almost 7 kms away from the main city and most of its 265 hectares is the natural msasa parkland where impalas, giraffes and Zebras run freely. You can view the animals from a platform or on foot, bicycle or on a horse safari. Due to the wide variety of animal kingdom and the bird kingdom that houses the sanctuary there is an excellent bird watching service too.

This is a wild life that is unique in a way that it provides shelter to injured and rescued and often orphaned animals. Located just near the airport, this wild life sanctuary is truly different place that needs to be experienced. A helpful tip -You need to book well in advance and children under the age of 12 are not allowed.

The national botanic garden houses a diverse variety of flowers and vegetation that thrives due to the city’s pleasant subtropical climate. This 58 acre wide garden has most of the Zimbabwean species as well as South African plants.
